Prompts for LP 4: Studio Art

plan a mini Holiday workshop

1.  Plan a really cool Holiday craft for kids.  We will have a party in our class with Hot Chocolate and everyone will form art stations for the younger crew to visit and make crafts to take to home for the Holidays.  Make them culturally appropriate and practice making them so you are a master when the kids come. Ask Mat for materials and set up a station when the time comes.

2.  Create a sculpture using one or many of the methods that Mat has highlighted in class.  Use paper mache or femo or found objects to represent a figure with gesture.  Choose an interesting pose that captures action or energy. Display with a pedestal

Prompts for LP 3: Studio Art HS

Artists: Francisco Goya, Ron English, Max Ernst, Duchamp
Movements: Dada, wheat paste, political uprising
Political Cartoons, miniatures, 3d printing, prepping for sculpture, paper mache, illustration

1. Political Poster or Cartoon:  create an original political cartoon.  I prefer this file to be a digital file in Flash or Adobe Animate so that we can edit and update together.  View several examples of political cartoons and posters.  Use text and format this piece in a traditional way.  Revise, edit, and don't avoid feedback.

2.  Mini Sculpture: use any materials that you would like to build a miniature sculpture.  I have polymer and will demonstrate the way to use it without wasting materials.  I will offer it, if you use it the way it is intended.  Feel free to order more through your EF-ask for Sculpey  I will also offer paper mache for those interested in set up and cleanup.  Use The Thinker as a model for your sculpture.  It should be small and tell a story at the same time.  Have fun -ask for feedback along the way.

3.  Design a cover for your phone:  Any kind will do but I like the 3d printed ones as a base.  You can bring your old one and paint over it or make a new one out of unique materials.  I will show everyone thingyverse so that we can all match specs with current designs.  I would like to see some sculptural ones that are non traditional and bigger. (like artsy ones that you can use but make a statement)

4.  DADA Photo/ video option:  explore the roots of the DADA movement and learn about Max Ernst and Duchamp.  Try to understand the origin of the movement and compare the chaos of the time to the chaos around us today.  React to the world around you in a way that a DADA artist might choose.  Use Photo and video to produce an original piece of art that is inspired by the DADA movement.

5.  Painting in the style of Ron English:  super sarcastic commentary about the material and social issues that surround us in POP culture.  Interpret several paintings with Mat and learn to paint a portrait that tells a story like English might.  Take a chance-design a narrative!

Prompts for LP 2: Studio Art

Theme: Animation and Photography
Why do we document our lives?

1.  What does it mean to be an artist who documents the world around us?  Learn the basics of DSLR photography and work on taking pictures with nobody in them.  Turn in a series of 5 Black and White Photos that you have edited with Mat to learn about post-production.  Send these to Costco for a nice print before critique (3 days notice for Mat to print)

-I have some 3d printed box cameras w/ black and white film if anyone is interested in a challenge?

2.  Dia de Los Muertos Art Show: I want to have a party and Art Show on November the 1rst for the Day of The Dead.  I anticipate decorating the back learning center to match the theme and invite everyone to make a proper day of the Dead Artwork for the show.  I am a huge fan of the skateboard deck paintings and have a small collection of my own to display with student Art.  I am open to all genres and would love to see animations or sculptures that match the theme.  We will watch Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas to get some creative ideas.  Talk to me soon so you can spend the month on something grand.

2.  What is stop animation?  Who is Tim Burton?  Create an original animation of your choice based on your skill level.  Some of you are good at this and I expect more than I have seen in the past.  Choose a spooky theme for Day of the Dead or use found objects to create  "ghost movements"

3.  Inktober: get involved-draw everyday and work through your frustration in the name of creativity.  Here is the list of themes for each day.  I will have an award for anyone who finishes all the prompts and I will feature you as a student artist on our blog and instagram.  This is a great portfolio item for juniors and seniors.

-illustrate everyday/ don't give up-save all evidence- no matter how bad you think it is!

4.  Mini ghost sculpture in any medium-clay/ paper mache/ 3d printed/ sculpey/ resin and sheets.

-make a mini ghost and use the idea of the upside down bowl to create a sheet that supports your sculpture.

Prompts for LP 1: High School

Theme: Inspiration
Artist: Picasso
Skills: filling. blending, collage

1. Where do you draw inspiration from in life?  Start to make an artwork that you think examines your source of inspiration.  Compare your journey to the journey of other artists.  Begin to respond to the concept of "being inspired"
Make an original piece of art in any medium that expresses your attitudes towards inspiration. use color and mixed media to narrate (collecting images from magazines and helping my friends are 2 of my favorite ways to approach this idea.)  -collage, watercolor, ink, or pencil for quick ideas.
-try taking a photo or using a graphic design program like illustrator or sketchbook pro.

2. Decorate your portfolio and begin to keep a master list of examples that are A+ work to be proud of and exhibit.  Get others to evaluate your work throughout the year and build a visual resume in a better way than you have in the past. Juniors and Seniors should work closely with Mat to gather all evidence and photograph these examples to make slides for college.

(use lightroom to publish a professional version for college) + register for comic con and get real professionals to review it -so cool!

3.  Fantasy: Begin to choose a Hero Avatar image for yourself or just in general that appeals to you visually.  This can be a really cool portfolio item for people to show an evolution of both illustration and costume design.  Soon we will all be comfortable making these avatars animated icons or moving GIFS as your skill set increases.  Each month it would be fun to do a new version or rendering of this character (later adding sidekicks and other characters)

-draw (try digital)-paint/ print/ sculpt or find a new app that does all this like Poser and begin to use it each month and change your design.

4.  Picasso:  respond to the work of Picasso-make something inspired by him or reminiscent of his work.  Color should be your emphasis and you should take some chances and try to bend the rules a little like Picasso would?  I am open to all genres as Picasso would be!  Try poetry or sculpting-plan a colorful collage.  Make a piece with a friend in the style of Picasso/ Video and Photo are even options.
